Malaysia

Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

07-11 FEB 2010

It’s getting to be the end of deployment. After this port we have only one more before we’re headed home! Heading home is on my mind more than what I’ll be doing here. If you can’t tell by that statement I am missing Jamie & Dawson a ton and I am ready to be home. That being said, I try not to sit around and feel sorry for myself when there is nothing I am able to really do about it.

One thing I am excited about is the fact that this is the one port that I’ve never been to. I’ve been to all of the other ports from the deployment before and even though they all have been an entirely different experience this time around it’s nice to get a new one. The first day out was just getting to know the place a little. We had the customary hour or so bus ride from the port to the downtown area they dropped us off in. We were dropped off right across the street from these big towers. They had a mall on the bottom 4 floors & the rest was offices. The subways were connected at either end of it.

When we got there the first thing we wanted was food so we took off in search of the Hard Rock Café, as usual. After going the long way around we found our way, and as usual the food was unimpressive but it was a fun environment. You’d think we wouldn’t be as picky as we are after eating on the ship for so long but sometimes it doesn’t matter, if it’s not that good it’s just not. We found the Chili’s at the mall later and that definitely made up for it though. I had a huge burger, a side of garlic bread, and the chips and queso dip. Much more like home and it was less than $10 for all of it! In between we mostly just walked around checking things out. It was very familiar really, lots of traffic and people in a small area and when you go further out of the downtown area it’s smaller & more people. We went to China Town to check out the stuff they had for sale there. I’m really not too much into the shopping but I like to look around. Some of the stuff get’s kinda crazy. We were there a couple of days before the Chinese New Year so they had some of the dragons dancing with the firecrackers going off everywhere. I think it was the year of the chicken too, they had a weird chicken with boxing gloves walking around and dancing with the dragons.

The only other thing I really did was take a “tour” to a water park. I was excited about that since it’s been so long since I’ve been to one but it really ended up being a little disappointing. The rides were unimpressive and they didn’t really have too many of them. They did have sort of a little mini animal sanctuary and I got a picture of a tiger though and they did have one decent ride. It was a zip line that went from the top of the park to the bottom. That was fun! I have always wanted to go to one of the zip line parks where they have multiple ones that you take from the top of a mountain to the bottom. That just made me want to go more now. We ended up leaving the park early and going to the mall. I saw a Wendy’s and if you know me you know I had to go for a jr bacon cheeseburger. Unfortunately they do not serve bacon ( they have no clue what they are missing!) so I got some chicken instead. It was actually pretty good.

Much better than the options they had at the market, no I didn’t try it this time.

So that was my trip to Malaysia . Fun but I’m ready to come home. Just Hong Kong , then Washington and then we’re home!
